Lepers, Lunatics and Saints: The Nativist Ethnography of Tawfiq Canaan and his Jerusalem Circle
I found this article interesting and relevant, if not somewhat sporadic. I wished he had talked a little more about the lepers. I did enjoy how he compared lunatics and saints in what seem contradictory views by the peasants.
Also, it's interesting how people revert back to local deities and tend to forget their original religion. I guess it makes sense when the veneration is geared towards a known being and not some obscure and hidden form like G-d.

Yeah, I think it's interesting too how people's perspectives change so easily-I've been thinking about that a lot lately. At my church we have been studying the book of Judges (from the Old Testament), and it's amazing how frequently the Israelites forget about God and begin to worship Ba'al (or whoever else it might be) because they have the tangible asherah poles or idols right in front of them. Then, in time, especially when they need to be rescued, they turn back to the God of their forefathers again. It's a crazy cycle (and I must say I'm quite familiar with something similar in my own relationship with God).
